In America

As a nineteen-year-old hero of the American Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette captured the imagination of Americans early on.  When he returned to America for the last time in 1824 as an elder statesman, he was greeted by an outpouring of public affection unlike anything ever witnessed in America.  Public tributes to the Marquis took various forms then, and they have continued to the present time.  The myriad ways in which America has celebrated Lafayette include literary works, musical compositions, paintings and sculpture, and most recently web tributes.  Here are just some of the ways that the Marquis de Lafayette lives on in America.
