Course Description: Science and technology contributed significantly to shaping values in classical and late antiquity throughout the areas in Eurasia and Africa controlled by Rome. This course examines how Rome's receptiveness to the Epicurean atomic theory; its engineering, technology, and applied science; its vast systems of transportation, communications, education, and entertainment; its political, administrative, and legal systems; and the conduit that its technologies and institutions provided for the transmission of values and ideas decisively shaped the modern world.
